My Cake and Don't Even Get to Eat It

So, here it is again. My favoritest week of the year - the try to make a cake and win a contest week. NOT!! haha

The kids' school has a carnival each January and as part of the fun festivities, there is a cake-decorating contest. Which is something that is definitely not my forte. Not even close. Not even a little bit. But the kids still want to try to win this contest each year. So I do what I can with the poor skills I have. Amazingly, each year I try to do this and I think “Hmm, I should take a cake-decorating class sometime this year and then really kick some butt next year.” But poof, soon the year is gone and it is somehow time to make a cake again. And I’m stuck trying to figure out how simple of a cake I can make and still win a silly contest.

Thankfully their dad is a little better at making Pinewood Derby (aka Grand Prix) cars for AWANA at church than I am at making cakes.  We've won a few trophies at that.  Thanks hubby for picking up the slack so we're not both losers.  haha

This is from a couple years ago.  My attempt at a Lego block cake using Oreos for the bumps:

This is from last year.  A Lego stud (which for those Lego-illiterate people, the small little circle pieces that always get vacuumed up).

And then this year we did the valentine heart candy cake.

I've at least learned how to make buttercream frosting in the last couple of years so while they may not be the prettiest cakes there, they certainly are yummy!!  Which, by the way, we don't get to eat this creation.  All the cakes brought in end up being prizes for the cake walk activity at the carnival.  And my kids never pick out the cake we brought.  OR, they don't win the cake walk fast enough to get good pickin's.  Either way, we usually end up with a store-bought something or other that wasn't entered in the contest and sometimes isn't even worth the calories to eat it.  Hmmmm...sounds like someone's got a good idea there.  :)
